Stephen Pryke Managing Networks in Project-Based Organisations

The first book demonstrating how to apply the principles of social network analysis to managing complex projects This groundbreaking book gets project managers and students up to speed on state-of-the-art applications of social network analysis (SNA) for observing, analysing, and managing complex projects. Written by an expert at the leading edge of the SNA project management movement, it clearly demonstrates how the principles of social network analysis can be used to provide a smarter, more efficient, holistic approach to managing complex projects. Project managers, especially those tasked with managing large, complex construction and engineering projects, traditionally have relied upon analysis and decision-making based upon hierarchical structures and vaguely defined project systems, much of which is borrowed from historic scientific management approaches. However, it has become apparent that a more sophisticated methodology is required for observing project systems and managing relationships with today’s more knowledgeable and demanding clients. Social network analysis (SNA) provides just such an approach. Unfortunately, existing books on social network analysis are written primarily for sociologists and mathematicians, with little or no regard for the needs of project managers – until now. The first and only book of its kind, Managing Networks in Project-Based Organisations: Offers a framework and a fully-developed approach to applying SNA theory and methodologies to large, complex projects Describes highly effective strategies and techniques for managing the iterative and transient relationships between network-defining actor roles involved in the delivery of complex projects Uses numerous real-world examples and case studies of successful applications of SNA to large-scale construction and engineering projects around the world Draws on its author’s decades of experience managing complex projects for demanding clients, as well as his extensive academic research in Project Management Managing Networks in Project-Based Organisations is an important working resource for project management professionals and consultants, especially those serving the construction and engineering industries. It is also an excellent text/reference for postgraduate students of project management and supply chain management, as well as academic researchers of project management.

Senaratne Sepani Managing Change in Construction Projects. A Knowledge-Based Approach

Managing Change in Construction Projects: a knowledge-based approach offers a new perspective on construction project change by viewing the process of change management as a knowledge-intensive activity, where team members bring their tacit and explicit knowledge into the situation; share, create and capture this collective knowledge for future re-use in similar situations. Through this knowledge-based approach, construction teams can successfully resolve and learn from change events, leading to an overall improved performance of the industry. The book will make a significant contribution to our understanding of construction project change by offering new theoretical and practical insights and models grounded in results of case studies conducted within two collaborative construction project team settings. By demonstrating how the social construction of knowledge works in construction settings, the authors challenge the prevailing change management solutions based on ‘hard’ IT approaches. They put forward a balanced view that incorporates both IT–based and socially constructed approaches to effective management of construction project change. helps construction managers to improve and learn through the process of construction project change presents new theoretical models and offers practical guidelines first research-based book to directly address project change from a knowledge-based perspective draws on detailed studies with construction companies, including Ballast Construction and Kier Construction encourages a move from the information driven, process integrated approach to a knowledge-based view

Stephen Pryke Social Network Analysis in Construction

The objective of the book is to make accessible the ways in which social network analysis (SNA) may be used to observe, monitor and analyse systems and relationships in major construction project coalitions. Although this has been an established analytical technique in the US for some time, it is only now being developed in the UK. Having spent nearly two decades investigating major project relationships using SNA, the author has brought together mathematical and sociological methods, and major project relationships in a manner that will inspire both academic interest and a desire to apply these concepts and techniques to live construction projects. Case studies include projects from two of the UKs largest property developers, the UK Ministry of Defence and a County Council. SNA is innovative – but potentially inaccessible to project management analysts and practitioners. This book will provide clear and relevant explanation and illustration of the possibilities of using SNA in a major project environment. In addition to offering the potential; for sophisticated retrospective analysis of a wide range of systems associated with construction and engineering project coalitions, the author looks at how we might apply the network analysis findings to the design and management of project and supply chain networks.

Mutiro Newton Sly, Fore Stanley The Perception of Corporate Services in a Metropolitan Municipality

Good governance has been and is a growing phenomenon for almost all business organisations regardless of size, profit margins and purpose for existence. Government, quasi-government, non-governmental organisations and even civic organisations have adopted a project-based approach to business. The City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality is one such organisation that had adopted a project-based approach to business. The challenge was how to effectively and efficiently implement governance issues around projects and business organisations. Managing complex and mega projects calls for certain leadership traits. A fusion of these traits at different management levels will be critical for effective delivery of services to the electorate. Models and plans need to be in place as guidance to successful implementation of projects. It is expected that an organisation like the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality should have proper communication channels and effective training programmes.

Sertac Cetiner XML Based Service Provisioning in Converged Voice and Data Networks

Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1,7, University of Ulm, 34 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In today's world, there are mainly two types of communication networks: circuitswitched networks and packet-switched networks. The current telephone networks are mostly based on the circuit-switched networks, whereas the Internet is mainly based on the packetswitched networks, which are also called IP networks. However, there is a strong tendency to combine both of these networks, which points to the direction that the IP networks are going to replace services provided by current telephone networks. This would eventually mean that IP networks might replace the telephone networks, in the future.Following are some reasons why IP networks seem to replace the circuit-switchednetworks:· First of all, the IP networks provide cheaper communication. Considering thatthe Internet access is nearly free, the cost advantage of IP networks gets clearer[25].· Secondly, IP networks provide the ability of integrating the data and voiceapplications, and even some other applications, like video-conferencing,integrated voice mail, e-mail, and the like [26].· Another important reason is that IP networks allow open implementation ofend systems. With a reasonable programming knowledge everybody couldimplement an end system for IP networks. In the classical telephony end userscannot implement any end system, but have to use whatever provi...

Dino Bouchlaghem Capture and Reuse of Project Knowledge in Construction

An organisation’s competitive advantage lies in the knowledge of its employees and the organisation’s ability to harness that knowledge to meet business objectives. Knowledge management is recognised in the construction industry as a potential tool for providing organisational benefits, but for a number of reasons – particularly the project based nature of construction, where teams are transient, multidisciplinary and often from different organisations – implementation has been only marginally successful. Capture and Reuse of Project Knowledge in Construction describes a methodology for the live capture of reusable project knowledge that reflects both the organisational and human dimensions of knowledge capture and reuse, as well as exploiting the benefits of technology. This methodology was developed in response to the shortcomings of current practices in managing project knowledge, the benefits offered by capturing and sharing knowledge immediately after it is generated, and the organisational benefit of reusing knowledge within a project based environment.

With the health of the world’s oceans threatened as never before, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) play a vitally important role in protecting marine and coastal habitats. Management of Marine Protected Areas: A Network Perspective draws on the results of a major EU-sponsored research project related to the establishment of networks of MPAs in the Mediterranean and Black Seas that transpired from February 2011 to January 2016. Featuring contributions by leading university- and national research institute-based scientists, chapters utilize the latest research data and developments in marine conservation policy to explore issues related to ways in which networks of MPAs may amplify the effectiveness and conservation benefits of individual areas within them. Topics addressed include the broader socio-economic impacts of MPAs in the Mediterranean and Black Seas; the use of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) to resolve conflicts between marine resource use and protection; special protection measures under the EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD); ecological value assessments in the Black Sea; the Ecosystem Approach (EA) for managing marine ecosystems; MPAs along Turkey’s Black Sea coast; MPAs and offshore wind farms; and managing and monitoring MPA networks within and between the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Timely and important, Management of Marine Protected Areas: A Network Perspective offers invaluable insights into the role of MPAs in preserving the welfare and long-term viability of our world’s oceans.

Anand Nayyar Improvised Energy Efficient Routing Protocol based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) for Wireless Sensor Networks

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, , course: Ph.D Computer Science, language: English, abstract: Routing and Energy Efficiency is regarded as highly challenging area of Sensor networks. Significant advancements in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) opens doors for wide implementation in real-time applications like Industrial Monitoring, Smart Cities development, Underwater monitoring operations, tracking objects and many more. Energy Efficient routing is regarded as the most challenging task. Sensor networks mostly operate in complex and dynamic environments and routing becomes tedious task to maintain as the network size increases. Lots of routing protocols- Reactive, Proactive and Hybrid are proposed by researchers but every protocol faces some limitations in terms of energy, routing, packet delivery ratio and security. Therefore, to overcome all the routing issues, the trend has shifted to Biological based Algorithms like Swarm Intelligence based techniques. Ant Colony Optimization based routing protocols have demonstrated exceptional results in terms of performance when applied to WSN routing. This thesis outlines routing protocols in sensor networks, highlight the concept of Swarm Intelligence and presents various Ant Colony Optimization based routing protocols for sensor networks. In addition to this, we present Ant Colony based Energy Efficient routing protocol (IEEMARP = Improvised Energy Efficient Multipath...

Chapman Chris How to Manage Project Opportunity and Risk. Why Uncertainty Management can be a Much Better Approach than Risk

Since I wrote the Foreword for the second edition of this book, risk management processes have become much more widely used, but controversy about what should be done and how best to do it has grown. Managing risk is a risky business. Chapman and Ward provide an in-depth explanation of why it is important to understand and manage underlying uncertainty in all its forms, in order to realise opportunities more fully and enhance corporate performance. They show what best practice should look like. The implications go well beyond the conventional wisdom of project risk management, providing an enlightening new perspective. —Professor Tony M. Ridley Imperial College London, Past President, Institution of Civil Engineers Chris Chapman and Stephen Ward continue to educate the profession with this masterful exposition of the differences between, and the potentials for combinations of, risk, uncertainty and opportunity. Particularly welcome is the way they integrate this trio into the project lifecycle – the bedrock of project management control and organization. —Peter W.G. Morris Head of School and Professor of Construction and Project Management University College London Chris Chapman and Stephen Ward’s books on Project Risk Management have been an essential part of my repertoire for twenty years, and they are top of my recommended reading for the courses I do on that subject. In this book they have enhanced their previous work to focus on uncertainty management and emphasise more strongly opportunities for improving project performance, rather then just identifying what can go wrong. A structured process is an essential part of managing project uncertainty, and their process is one of the most powerful. This book will be added to my repertoire. —Rodney Turner Professor of Project Management, SKEMA Business School Lille A profoundly important book. With How to Manage Project Opportunity and Risk, Chris Chapman and Stephen Ward take a good thing and make it better. Members of the project management profession have been influenced for years by their insights into project risk management. With this latest instalment the authors demonstrate that risk and uncertainty needn’t be dreaded; in fact, the reverse side of the ‘risk coin’ has always been opportunity. My sincere appreciation to Chapman and Ward for turning this particular coin over and showing readers, academic and practitioner alike, the opportunity embedded in managing projects. —Jeffrey K. Li Shaomin Managing International Business in Relation-Based Versus Rule-Based Countries

Most executives and business students are familiar with how the rule-based system functions; few understand how relation-based system works (which accounts for the majority of the countries in the world). Many dismiss it as backwards and attribute it to cultural traditions and norms (such as the Chinese guanxi tradition). This book dispels these myths and shows that people rely on the relation-based system not owing to specific cultural factors, but because of the stage of development in these countries. When the market is limited in scale and informal networks are thick, the relation-based system can be quite effective and efficient. The author applies this line of thinking to explain why business practices differ and how business people should interact across the two governance systems.

The approach and the needed basic knowledge are assigned to three categories: processes, components and techniques. Processes ensure that start, end and advancement of the project are monitored and controlled. The processes embrace the activities from setting the project off on the right track, through controlling and managing the progress to the completion of the project. Each PRINCE2 project will have to regard these processes differently. The following processes are applied in PRINCE2: Starting Up a Project, Initiating a Project, Directing a Project, Controlling a Stage, Managing Product Delivery, Managing Stage Boundaries, Closing a Project and Planning. The components are key aspects of project management that are used throughout the processes and include the Business Case,...

Luonan Chen Biomolecular Networks. Methods and Applications in Systems Biology

Alternative techniques and tools for analyzing biomolecular networks With the recent rapid advances in molecular biology, high-throughput experimental methods have resulted in enormous amounts of data that can be used to study biomolecular networks in living organisms. With this development has come recognition of the fact that a complicated living organism cannot be fully understood by merely analyzing individual components. Rather, it is the interactions of components or biomolecular networks that are ultimately responsible for an organisms form and function. This book addresses the important need for a new set of computational tools to reveal essential biological mechanisms from a systems biology approach. Readers will get comprehensive coverage of analyzing biomolecular networks in cellular systems based on available experimental data with an emphasis on the aspects of network, system, integration, and engineering. Each topic is treated in depth with specific biological problems and novel computational methods: GENE NETWORKS—Transcriptional regulation; reconstruction of gene regulatory networks; and inference of transcriptional regulatory networks PROTEIN INTERACTION NETWORKS—Prediction of protein-protein interactions; topological structure of biomolecular networks; alignment of biomolecular networks; and network-based prediction of protein function METABOLIC NETWORKS AND SIGNALING NETWORKS—Analysis, reconstruction, and applications of metabolic networks; modeling and inference of signaling networks; and other topics and new trends In addition to theoretical results and methods, many computational software tools are referenced and available from the authors Web sites. Biomolecular Networks is an indispensable reference for researchers and graduate students in bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, computer science, and applied mathematics.

Toni Janevski NGN Architectures, Protocols and Services

Comprehensive coverage explaining the correlation and synergy between Next Generation Networks and the existing standardized technologies This book focuses on Next Generation Networks (NGN); in particular, on NGN architectures, protocols and services, including technologies, regulation and business aspects. NGN provides convergence between the traditional telecommunications and the Internet, and it is globally standardized by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), where ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for Information and Communication Technologies – ICTs. The convergence towards the NGN is based on the Internet technologies, and the introductory chapters cover the Internet fundamentals of today, including architectures, protocols (IPv4, IPv6, TCP, DNS, etc.), Internet services (WWW, e-mail, BitTorrent, Skype, and more), as well as Internet governance. Further, the prerequisite for convergence of all ICT services over single network architectures is broadband access to the Internet. Hence, the book includes architectures of fixed broadband Internet access networks, such as DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) networks, cable networks, FTTH (Fiber To The Home), next generation passive and active optical networks, and metro Ethernet. It also covers network architectures for next generation (4G) mobile and wireless networks (LTE/LTE-Advanced, and Mobile WiMAX 2.0), then Fixed Mobile Convergence – FMC, next generation mobile services, as well as business and regulatory aspects for next generation mobile networks and services. Comprehensive coverage explaining the correlation and synergy between Next Generation Networks and the existing standardized technologies Focuses on Next Generation Networks (NGN) as defined by the ITU, including performance, service architectures and mechanisms, common IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), control and signalling protocols used in NGN, security approaches, identity management, NGN Service Overlay Networks, and NGN business models Examines the most important NGN services, including QoS-enabled VoIP, IPTV over NGN, web services in NGN, peer-to-peer services, Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) services, VPN services in NGN, Internet of things and web of things Includes the transition towards NGN from the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Networks) and from the best-effort Internet via the same Internet access Explores advanced topics such as IPv6-based NGN, network virtualization, and future packet based networks, as well as business challenges and opportunities for the NGN evolved networks and services Essential reading for engineers and employees from regulatory bodies, government organisations, telecommunication companies, ICT companies.

Eddie Fisher Development of a new competence and behaviour model for skills in working with people project managers

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, The Open University (Open University, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom), 235 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The growing penetration of projects as a way of organising work in many organisations has created a shortcoming between what companies expect in terms of project delivery and the way in which their project managers execute projects. The constantly changing demands have created a need for project managers to manage the people in their projects more effectively to meet these expectations. A review of the general and project management literature has revealed that a shortcoming exists and the nature of this shortcoming. What used to be appropriate skills in working with people are no longer adequate now that working practices are changing in response to increases in pressures to achieve better results. This thesis has developed a competence and behaviour model for skills in working with people for project managers that provides the means to fill the shortcoming. The exploration to develop this model has taken place mainly through interviews with project managers from the community of practice in United Kingdom organisations, supplemented by the participatory research observations of the researcher as a practising project management professional. The research focus was on the impact humans make in the activities of project m...

Tony Merna Managing Risk in Construction Projects

Investment in any new project invariably carries risk but the construction industry is subject to more risk and uncertainty than perhaps any other industry. This guide for construction managers, project managers and quantity surveyors as well as for students shows how the risk management process improves decision-making. Managing Risk in Construction Projects offers practical guidance on identifying, assessing and managing risk and provides a sound basis for effective decision-making in conditions of uncertainty. The book focuses on theoretical aspects of risk management but also clarifies procedures for undertaking and utilising decisions. This blend of theory and practice is the real message of the book and, with a strong authorship team of practitioners and leading academics, the book provides an authoritative guide for practitioners having to manage real projects. It discusses a number of general concepts, including projects, project phases, and risk attitude before introducing various risk management techniques. This third edition has been extended to recognize the reality of multi-project or programme management and the risks in this context; to highlight the particular problems of risk in international joint ventures; and to provide more coverage of PFI and PPP. With case studies and examples of good practice, the book offers the distilled knowledge of over 100 man-years of experience in working on all aspects of project risk, giving sound practical guidance on identifying, assessing and managing risk.
